Despues de estudiar su tesis dedicada a aplicaciones de cromatografia a adsorpcion, el Dr. François Figueras estudio cinetica de reacciones cataliticas. En donde Las contribuciones mas notables fueron:
1) Las demonstraciones acerca de que los sitios basicos tienen importancia en deshidratacion de alcoholes,
2) Las demostraciones de un efecto de un soporte acido en hidrogenacion de benzeno, atribuido a una modificacion electronica del paladio
3) Primer estudio del estado de Sn (Estaño) en los catalizadores de reformacion PtSn (Platino-Estaño), desmonstrando que Sn (Estaño) es solo parcialmente reducido y modifica la acidez del soporte.
3) Desmostracion de un efecto de la coordinacion de los cationes Mo (Molibdeno) y W (Tungsteno)en la selectividad de oxidacion del propeno.
Con el cambio a Montpellier (1978-1994), estudia sintesis de zeolitas y arcillas pilareadas aplicadas a catalisis acida, los efectos de tamano de particulas metallicas y de aliacion en reacciones como hidrogenolisis de enlaces C-C y C-Cl, hidrogenaciones de nitro compuestos y de aldehydos a-insaturados. En sintesis de zeolitas, su contribucion fue dedicada al estudio de la cinetica de cristallizacion, que permitio preparar formas estables de offretita y mazzita, por las cuales obtuvo patentes internacionales, ganando pleitos contra Mobil. Teniendo el control de catalizadores originales, estudia por primera vez en catalisis heterogenia, reacciones de quimica fina como nitracion de aromaticos, hidratacion de olefinas, hidroxilacion de fenoles. En catalisis por metales, su contribucion fué la preparacion de metales soportados [Rh (Rodio), Ru (Rutenio), Pt (Platino)] con distribuciones homogenias de tallas de particulas de 1nm, o de 3 nm, que dieron la demonstracion que existen efectos de talla de particulas y de soporte en varias reacciones de interes industrial : las propriedades cataliticas son controladas por la coordinacion de los atomos metalicos superficiales en hidrogeolisis de enlaces C-C, (Carbono-Carbono) y por la propriedades collectivas en hidrogenolisis C-Cl (Carbono-Cloro). La reaccion del 2,2,3,3-trimethylbutano permitio por ejemplo de demonstrar la segragacion topologica de Sn (Estaño), [Pb, (Plomo), Sb (Antimonio)] en sitios de baja coordinacion de pequenas particulas y la de Ge en las caras densas.
De regreso en Lyon (1994), cambio al estudio de oxidos sulfatados, oxidos mixtos hidrofobos, y catalizadores basicos. Sus contribuciones fueron aplicaciones en quimica fina (alkilacion, acilacion, isomerizacion de epoxidos en catalisis acida; epoxidacion, aldolisacion, adiciones de Michael, de Wittig, hidrogenacion por transferencia de hidrogeno, sintesis de carbonatos de alkilo) pero tambien en reduccion de NOx por reduccion selectiva o trampas de NOx. Un resultado original es la posibilidad de catalizar alkilacion o acylacion con cloruros de alkilo o de acilo por mecanismos redox. En este caso los catalizadores los mas eficientes tienen cationes reductibles, que son mas activos que los acidos solidos los mas fuertes.
En catalisis basica, describio el primer solido con propriedades de super base regenerable. Estos solidos acidos o basicos fueron aplicados como soportes de metales para reacciones bifoncionales como deNOx o hidrogenacion de notrobenzeno en para aminofenol (proceso sin efluyentes salinos), y reacciones de formation de enlaces C-C (Carbono-Carbono) como la de Heck. En cada campo los resultados originales de interes industrial fueron protegidos por patentes, por ejemplo aldolisacion de acetona en hidrotalcita rehidratada, trampas de NOx con CuO, nueva sintesis de p-aminofenol.
Publicaciones : Autor/coautor de unas 320 publicaciones y de 17 patentes. Estas publicaciones tienen unas 6380 citas, con un promedio de 26.9 citas por papel y un factor h=42. Su revista en arcillas pilareadas es uno de los 10 articulos mas citados de Catalysis Reviews Science –Engineering (390 citas)
Tesis dirigidas: Ha dirigido unas 50 tesis. Orgulloso de haber visto a la mayoria de ellos encontrar un empleo, bien en investigacion o en la industria, por ejemplo H.Kochkar (Exxon), J. Lopez (Rhodia), P. Bernadi (Elf), T. Cseri (IFP), J. Palomeque, J. Sanchez et H Armendariz (IMP), C. Walter (Faurecia). La escuela mexicana de catalisis se formo al rededor de sus estudiantes R. Gomez, G del Angel, S. Fuentes, R. Gomez obtuvo el Premio Nacional de Ciencias, la maxima distinccion en ciencia en Mexico. Desde 1994 la lista es la siguiente
